Understanding generation and mitigation of runaway electrons in disruptions is important for the safe operation of future tokamaks. In this paper we investigate the runaway dynamics in reactor-scale spherical tokamaks, focusing on a compact nominal design with a plasma current of 21 megaamperes (MA), 1.8 T magnetic field on axis and major radius of approximately 3 m. We study both the severity of runaway generation during unmitigated disruptions, and the effect that typical mitigation schemes based on massive material injection have on runaway production. The study is conducted using the numerical framework dream (Disruption Runaway Electron Analysis Model). We find that, in many cases, mitigation strategies are necessary to prevent the runaway current from reaching multi-MA levels. Our results indicate that, with a suitably chosen deuterium–neon mixture for mitigation, it is possible to achieve a tolerable runaway current and ohmic current evolution. However, this does not account for the runaway source due to wall activation, which has been found to severely limit successful mitigation at conventional aspect ratios, but whose definition requires a more complete wall specification. Furthermore, the majority of the thermal energy loss is found to happen through radial transport rather than radiation, which poses a risk of unacceptable localised heat loads.
Responding to Regulatory Barriers to “Ethical Meat”: Are On-Farm Slaughter Exemptions the Solution?

Mandatory meat inspection requirements have long been a source of frustration for advocates of ethical meat. Seen as overly restrictive and ill-adapted to the realities on the ground, some argue that farm-to-consumer sales should be subject to less stringent inspection requirements than conventional meat supply chains. Recently, a series of legislative reforms authorizing on-farm slaughter suggests that policy makers are listening. But do on-farm slaughter exemptions really facilitate ethical meat sales? To answer this question, this paper explores meat inspection systems in Quebec, Ontario, and Vermont. Drawing on data obtained from semi-structured interviews with producers, processors, and policy advisors, it argues that inspection requirements may not be the barriers they are presumed to be. Instead, producers and processors face other more significant financial and structural challenges. These need to be addressed if ethical meat is to be a viable alternative to the dominant model of animal agriculture.
Fontan completion during winter season is not associated with higher mortality or morbidity in the early post-operative period

Objectives:
The aim of our study was to compare post-operative outcome after total cavopulmonary connection between patients operated during winter and summer season.
Methods:We retrospectively studied 211 patients who underwent extracardiac total cavopulmonary connection completion at our institution between 1995 and 2015 (median age 4 (1–42) years). Seventy (33%) patients were operated during winter (November to March) and 141 (67%) patients during summer season (April to October).
Results:Patients operated during winter and summer season showed no difference in early mortality (7% versus 5%, p = 0.52) and severe morbidity like need for early Fontan takedown (1% versus 1%, p = 0.99) and need for mechanical circulatory support (9% versus 4%, p = 0.12). The post-operative course and haemodynamic outcome were comparable between both groups of patients (ICU (4 versus 3 days, p = 0.44) and hospital stay (15 versus 14 days, p = 0.28), prolonged pleural effusions (36% versus 31%, p = 0.51), need for dialysis (16% versus 11%, p = 0.37), ascites (37% versus 33%, p = 0.52), supraventricular tachyarrhythmia (16% versus 13%, p = 0.56) and chylothorax (26% versus 16%, p = 0.12), change of antibiotic treatment (47% versus 36%, p = 0.06), prolonged inotropic support (24% versus 14%, p = 0.05), intubation time (15 versus 12 hours, p = 0.33), and incidence of fast-track extubation (11% versus 22%, p = 0.06).
Conclusion:Outcomes after total cavopulmonary connection completion during winter and summer season were comparably related to mortality, severe morbidity, or longer hospital stay in the early post-operative period. These results suggest that total cavopulmonary connection completion during winter season is as safe as during summer season.
Presence of reduced regional left ventricular function even in the absence of left ventricular wall scar tissue in the long term after repair of an anomalous left coronary artery from the pulmonary artery

Background
We sought to assess left ventricular regional function in patients with and without left ventricular wall scar tissue in the long term after repair of an anomalous origin of the left coronary artery from the pulmonary artery.
MethodsA total of 20 patients aged 12.8±7.4 years were assessed 10 (0.5–17) years after the repair of an anomalous origin of the left coronary artery from the pulmonary artery; of them, 10 (50%) patients showed left ventricular wall scar tissue on current cardiac MRI. Left ventricular regional function was assessed by two-dimensional speckle-tracking echocardiography in 10 patients with scar tissue and 10 patients without scar tissue and in 10 age-matched controls.
ResultsIn patients with scar tissue, MRI-derived left ventricular ejection fraction was significantly reduced compared with that in patients without scar tissue (51 versus 61%, p<0.05), and echocardiography-derived longitudinal strain was significantly reduced in five of six left ventricular areas compared with that in healthy controls (average relative reduction, 46%; p<0.05). In patients without scar tissue, longitudinal strain was significantly reduced in two of six left ventricular areas (average relative reduction, 23%; p<0.05) and circumferential strain was reduced in one of six left ventricular areas (relative reduction, 56%; p<0.05) compared with that in healthy controls.
ConclusionsRegional left ventricular function is reduced even in patients without left ventricular wall scar tissue late after successful repair of an anomalous origin of the left coronary artery from the pulmonary artery. This highlights the need for meticulous lifelong follow-up in all patients with a repaired anomalous origin of the left coronary artery from the pulmonary artery.
Influence of Flumioxazin Application Timing and Rate on Cotton Emergence and Yield

Palmer amaranth is one of the most troublesome weeds in the southeast. Significant reductions in cotton yield because of Palmer amaranth competition warrant intense control efforts consisting of both PRE and POST herbicides. Flumioxazin is a soil-active, protoporphyrinogen oxidase-inhibiting herbicide that is labeled for use in cotton 14 to 21 d before planting; however, shorter preplant application intervals could increase the duration of control from this herbicide. Flumioxazin was applied at 3 rates (0.03 and 0.06 kg ai ha−1 in 2009 and an additional rate of 0.09 kg ai ha−1 in 2010 and 2011) and 6 application timings (30, 20, 15, 10, 5, and 0 d before planting cotton). Cotton emergence, height, and yield were documented. In 2009, at the Jay and Citra, FL, sites, cotton emergence, plant height, and yield were not affected by any herbicide rate or timing. At Dawson, GA, in the same year, significant reduction in cotton stand counts were observed with application timings < 10 d before planting. Cotton height was reduced similarly at Dawson, GA, but recovered to levels equal to the control by 45 d after planting (DAP). It is believed that rainfall during cotton emergence resulted in this significant level of injury at Dawson, GA. In 2010 and 2011, at Citra, FL, cotton emergence was only reduced when 0.06 and 0.09 kg ha−1 were applied at planting. Cotton height showed a similar pattern with additional reductions in height at 0.03 kg ha−1 applied at planting and 0.09 kg ha−1 applied 5 d before planting. In 2010 and 2011, at Citra, FL, yield was reduced when 0.09 kg ha−1 flumioxazin was applied 5 d before planting and when 0.06 and 0.09 kg ha−1 were applied at planting. These results indicate that flumioxazin application intervals can be shortened with little crop impact likely to be seen at lower use rates. However, rainfall at crop emergence has the potential to significantly injure cotton and reduce yield.
Laboratory Documentation of Multiple-Herbicide Tolerance to Fluridone, Norflurazon, and Topramazone in a Hybrid Watermilfoil (Myriophyllum spicatum × M. sibiricum) Population

Invasive watermilfoils, specifically Eurasian watermilfoil and the interspecific hybrid of Eurasian watermilfoil × northern watermilfoil, continue to be problematic for water resource managers. Herbicides are often used to control these nuisance weeds and have been historically successful in controlling Eurasian watermilfoil. A population of hybrid watermilfoil from Townline Lake in Michigan has shown increased tolerance to the herbicide fluridone. The objective of this work is to determine if cross- and multiple tolerance have also developed in this population. Eurasian watermilfoil plants collected from multiple sites and plants from Townline Lake were treated with 0, 5, 10, 20, 40, or 80 µg L−1 of fluridone, norflurazon, or topramezone. Fluridone and norflurazon inhibit phytoene desaturase, whereas topramezone is a 4-hydroxyphenylpyruvate dioxygenase-inhibiting herbicide. Chlorophyll fluorescence (Fv/Fm) and pigment content was measured at 10 d after treatment. Townline Lake plants responded differently from susceptible plants when treated with fluridone, norflurazon, and topramezone at 40 µg L−1. These results indicate that the Townline population of hybrid watermilfoil has inherent tolerance to multiple herbicide modes of action. These results are especially significant as topramezone has recently been labeled for aquatic use. Screening of additional herbicides to determine potential herbicide tolerance of the Townline Lake population is recommended.
Palmer Amaranth (Amaranthus palmeri) Identification and Documentation of ALS-Resistance in Argentina

Palmer amaranth has greatly disrupted agricultural practices in the United States with its rapid growth and rapid evolution of herbicide resistance. This weed species is now suspected in Argentina. To document whether the suspected plant populations are indeed Palmer amaranth, molecular comparisons to known standards were conducted. Additionally, these same plant populations were screened for possible herbicide resistance to several acetolactate synthase (ALS)-inhibiting herbicides. Sequencing data confirmed that suspected populations (A2, A3, A4) were indeed Palmer amaranth. Another population (A1) was tested to determine whether hybridization had occurred between Palmer amaranth and mucronate amaranth the native amaranth species of the region. Tests confirmed that no hybridization had occurred and that A1 was simply a unique phenotype of mucronate amaranth. Each population was screened for resistance to imazapic, nicosulfuron, and diclosulam. All Palmer amaranth populations from Argentina were shown to be resistant to at least one ALS-inhibiting herbicide. The populations were then subjected to further testing to identify the mutation responsible for the observed ALS resistance. All mucronate amaranth populations exhibited a mutation previously documented to confer ALS resistance (S653N). No known resistance-conferring mutations were found in Palmer amaranth.

Palmer amaranth is a troublesome weed in cotton production. Yield losses of 65% have been reported from season-long Palmer amaranth competition with cotton. To determine whether water is a factor in this system, experiments were conduced in 2011, 2012, and 2013 in Citra, FL, and in Tifton, GA. In 2011, infrequent rainfall lead to drought stress. The presence of Palmer amaranth resulted in decreased soil relative water content up to 1 m in depth. Cotton stomatal conductance (gs) was reduced up to 1.8 m from a Palmer amaranth plant. In 2012 and 2013 higher than average rainfall resulted in excess water throughout the growing season. In this situation, no differences were found in soil relative water content or cotton gs as a function of proximity to Palmer amaranth. A positive linear trend was found in cotton photosynthesis and yield; each parameter increased as distance from Palmer amaranth increased. Even in these well-watered conditions, daily water use of Palmer amaranth was considerably higher than that of cotton, at 1.2 and 0.49 g H20 cm−2 d−1, respectively. Although Palmer amaranth removed more water from the soil profile, rainfall was adequate to replenish the profile in 2 of the 3 yr of this study. However, yield loss due to Palmer amaranth was still observed despite no change in gs, indicating other factors, such as competition for light or response to neighboring plants during development, are driving yield loss.
Development of a Rapid Assay to Detect Reduced Fluridone Sensitivity in Invasive Watermilfoils

Fluridone has been used to successfully manage Eurasian watermilfoil since the late 1980s. However, recent documentation of hybrid watermilfoils and the resulting potential for reduced herbicide sensitivity necessitate the need for an assay to determine individual population response to fluridone. A known fluridone-resistant hybrid watermilfoil population from Townline Lake in Michigan was compared to 11 Eurasian and hybrid watermilfoil populations in laboratory experiments to develop a method for determining response to fluridone. Apical shoot tips were exposed to increasing concentrations of fluridone (0 to 48 μg L−1) for 3, 5, and 7 d. Chlorophyll fluorescence (Fv/Fm) was evaluated using a pulse-amplitude modulated fluorometer at each interval along with pigment analysis of chlorophyll and β-carotene at the 7-d interval. Fv/Fm and pigment analysis yielded the same results. A fluridone concentration of 12 μg L−1 and an analysis interval of 7 d were found to be optimal in determining invasive watermilfoil response to fluridone. Use of such small-scale assays can provide resource managers a rapid tool to cost-effectively evaluate invasive watermilfoil response to fluridone.
Left Atrium Dilatation and Multiple Vascular Territory Strokes

Background: Atrial fibrillation (AF) is a cause of ischemic stroke and is associated with recurrence and with acute multi-vessel territory non lacunar stroke. Many cryptogenic strokes could be secondary to undiagnosed paroxystic AF. As left atrium (LA) dilatation is a risk factor of AF, we sought to determine if moderate or severe LA dilatation was associated with multiple vascular territory infarcts on magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) in patients with acute ischemic stroke without known AF. Normal LA diameter values are ≤4.0 cm for men and ≤3.8 for women. Methods: Patients who presented at our center between 2006 and 2011 with a diagnosis of acute ischemic stroke (AIS) or transient ischemick attack (TIA) who had a transthoracic echocardiography and a brain MRI were included. Patients with known or de novo AF diagnosed within 3 months of the event were excluded. The main outcome was the presence of acute multi-vessel territory infarct(s) on MRI.Results: 356 patients were included. The mean LA diameter was 37 mm in the control group (normal or mildly dilated LA) and 49 mm in those with moderately to severely enlarged LA (p<0.001). More patients in the LA dilatation group met the main outcome (20% vs 6%; OR 3.89; 95% CI 1.32-11.43; p=0.0014). Conclusions: LA dilatation (at least moderate) is associated with acute non lacunar multiple vascular territory infarcts on MRI in patients with AIS or TIA without known AF or a confirmed diagnosis of AF. Further studies are necessary to determine if this population might benefit from anticoagulation therapy.
Flow-sensitive four-dimensional velocity-encoded magnetic resonance imaging reveals abnormal blood flow patterns in the aorta and pulmonary trunk of patients with transposition

Background and objectives
Flow profiles are important determinants of fluid–vessel wall interactions. The aim of this study was to assess blood flow profiles in the aorta and pulmonary trunk in patients with transposition and different ventriculoarterial connection, and hence different mechanics of the coherent pump.
MethodsIn all, 29 patients with operated transposition – concordant atrioventricular and discordant ventriculoarterial connection, and no other cardiac malformation – and eight healthy volunteers were assessed with cardiac magnetic resonance imaging: n = 17 patients after atrial redirection, with a morphologic right ventricle acting as systemic pump and a morphologic left ventricle connected to the pulmonary trunk, and n = 12 patients after the arterial switch procedure, with physiologic ventriculoarterial connections. Flow-sensitive four-dimensional velocity-encoded magnetic resonance imaging was used to analyse systolic flow patterns in the aorta and pulmonary trunk, relating to helical flow and vortex formation.
ResultsIn the aorta, overall helicity was present in healthy volunteers, but it was absent in all patients independent on the operation technique. Partial helices were observed in the ascending aorta of 58% of patients after arterial switch. In the pulmonary trunk, mostly parallel flow was seen in healthy volunteers and in patients after arterial switch, whereas vortex formation was present in 88% of patients after atrial redirection.
ConclusionBlood flow patterns differ substantially between the groups. In addition to varying mechanics of the coherent pumping ventricles, the absent overall helicity in all patients might be explained by the missing looping of the aorta in transposition.

Objectives
To assess if flow-sensitive four-dimensional velocity-encoded cine magnetic resonance imaging adds value in diagnosing patients with suspected partial anomalous pulmonary venous drainage.
MethodsIn six patients with echocardiographically suspected partial anomalous pulmonary venous drainage, anatomy was evaluated using standard magnetic resonance imaging including angiography. Functional analysis included shunt calculations from flow measurements. We used four-dimensional velocity-encoded cine magnetic resonance imaging for visualisation of maldraining pulmonary veins and quantification of flow via the maldraining veins and interatrial communications, if present.
ResultsIn all patients, the diagnosis of partial anomalous pulmonary venous drainage was confirmed by standard magnetic resonance imaging. Shunt volumes ranged from 1.4:1 to 4.7:1. Drainage sites were the superior caval vein (n = 5) or the vertical vein (n = 1). Multiple maldraining pulmonary veins were found in three patients. Pulmonary arteries and veins could be clearly distinguished by selective visualisation using four-dimensional velocity-encoded cine magnetic resonance imaging. Flow measured individually in maldraining pulmonary veins in six patients and across the interatrial communication in three patients revealed a percentage of the overall shunt volume of 30–100% and 58–70%, respectively.
ConclusionSelective visualisation of individual vessels and their flow characteristics by four-dimensional velocity-encoded cine magnetic resonance imaging facilitates in distinguishing adjacent pulmonary arteries and veins and thus improves the accurate diagnosis of maldraining pulmonary veins. By detailed quantification of shunt volumes, additional information for planning of treatment strategies is provided. This method adds clinical value and might replace contrast-enhanced magnetic resonance angiography in these patients in the future.

Although the dynamic field model predicts infants' perseverative behavior in the context of the A-not-B manual search task, it does not account for infant perseveration in other contexts. An alternative cognitive capacity explanation for perseveration is more parsimonious. It accounts for the graded nature of perseverative responses and perseveration in different contexts.
